If you’ve been enjoying South Mountain Creamery eggs at home or in our stores, we want to give you a quick heads-up about an important (and very normal) part of our egg cycle happening at the end of this month.

Every 18 to 20 months, we complete what we call a flock change. This process helps us maintain the highest standards of animal care, egg quality, and barn cleanliness.

What’s happening this month?

By the end of the month, we will be transitioning out our current laying hens and bringing in a brand-new flock. During this time, there will be a short break in egg production while we complete the full process. That includes:

  • Moving out the current flock
  • Thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the barn from top to bottom
  • Bringing in a new flock of hens
  • Allowing time for the new birds to settle in before egg production starts

What you may notice

During this short gap in production, we will be sourcing free-range, cage-free, and locally produced eggs so we can continue serving you without interruption.

Why we do this

Flock rotation is an important part of how we operate. It allows us to maintain a clean and healthy barn environment, support the wellbeing of our hens, and uphold our Certified Humane standards, which prioritize space, comfort, and quality care.

We appreciate your patience during this short transition and are grateful for your continued support. We’re looking forward to welcoming our new flock and bringing South Mountain Creamery eggs back in full supply very soon.
