Around the farm, June is our favorite time of year. The grass gets a little greener. The sunsets stretch a little longer. Kids play on our playground with ice cream dripping down their hands while the cows settle in for the evening. Here at South Mountain Creamery, June means one thing: National Dairy Month has officially arrived.

A Tradition for 90 Years

National Dairy Month began back in 1937 as “National Milk Month,” created to encourage milk consumption during the summer months when refrigeration and transportation systems looked very different than they do today. Over time, what started as a practical campaign evolved into a nationwide celebration of dairy farmers and the communities built around them. Nearly 90 years later, Dairy Month is still going strong.

“At our farm, Dairy Month is really about reconnecting people with where their food comes from. Families want food they can trust, and we’re proud to be part of that connection every single day.”

The Work Behind Your Glass of Milk

Long before the sun rises, the work has already begun on the farm. Preparing fresh milk, maintaining the land, and making sure every delivery meets the standards families count on all happen before most people begin their mornings. Dairy farming is more than a job. It is a daily commitment rooted in consistency, care, and community.

Dairy Month shines a light on that work while also helping bridge the growing gap between consumers and agriculture. Today, many people are generations removed from farming. Children may recognize milk from the grocery store before they ever learn it starts on a farm. That is why opportunities to connect directly with local farms matter now more than ever.

I like to say we are built on community. We are able to connect with people who also have the same goal of bringing good food to good people.

Connecting Families to Their Food

For many farms, June becomes a time to welcome visitors, host events, and celebrate the role dairy plays in everyday life. It is a reminder that dairy farming is not just about products. It is about people, relationships, and traditions passed down through generations.

Around here, that is definitely something we can raise a glass of milk to.

So this June, we’re celebrating the farmers, the families, and the communities gathered around the table together every day. From all of us at South Mountain Creamery, happy National Dairy Month.
