July Farm Happenings

Sunrise at South Mountain Creamery Dairy

It not only feels like summer outside…but it also tastes like summer. Peppers, Peaches, Berries, Summer Squash, Sweet corn—the local season abundance is here.

Did you watch our new video yesterday, when it launched? (See it here.) South Mountain Creamery is a very unique home delivery service. We strive to bring you the highest quality local products, delivering the farmers market to your door. But that is not all…We are also the farmers who are up at 1am milking the cows, the farmers out in the fields planting and harvesting the season, the folks with our hands in the soil. Your support provides stability to our farm, plus the over 200 local sustainable farmers and mom and pop shops that we work with. While Big Companies are focusing on finding ways to ship groceries… we are staying focused on what we know: local farming, home delivery, glass-bottled milk, and farm-fresh eggs, meats, produce. We bring you the local Farmers Market … from dirt to door! We love what we do, and we hope you do to!

On Monday we are digging up all of our potatoes here on the farm. Since it is so hot, we plan to start at 3:30am! As the sun rises around 5am, about a dozen middle school, high school, and college-aged kids will arrive at the farm to help gather, clean, and put away the harvest.

Baby calf at South Mountain CreameryWe are having a birthing boom in our Calf Barn! We expected and planned for this, but still – it is amazing on how many babies are being born right now! This time of year, we are busy keeping up with all of the animals, making sure everyone has shade, water and of course plenty of grass.

I spent a good hour yesterday, driving around and getting lost in all the nooks and crannies of the farm. Checking in on the cows, the chickens, the beef steers. Pausing every once in a while, to look around as I was surrounded by crop fields. Sometimes we all get so busy, that we forget to stop and smell the roses, so to speak. I challenge everyone this week, to pause for a moment, and appreciate the ordinary. Life is good, even when it is tough.
