Farm-to-Table Ice Cream

July is ice cream month and South Mountain Creamery is celebrating by launcing an all-new line of ice cream, Farm-to-Table Ice Cream.

South Mountain Creamery is all about fresh. It produces and processes all its dairy products right on the farm. The cows are milked just 50 yards from The Creamery. Milk is made into ice cream within 12 hours of milking, making it as fresh as it can. SMC currently offers 45 flavors of hand made ice cream. Now, each month, it will introduce a new flavor with fresh in-season ingredients.

Tony Brusco shares his enthusiasm for his unique idea:

“It just makes sense. Our ice cream is so fresh and the flavor is incredible. We literally watch the milk go from the cow to the ice cream machine where we then add ingredients to create our famous flavors like Red, White & Blue and Dirt Road. With our Farm-to-Table line, we will capitalize on the freshness of our milk, with fresh LOCAL ingredients. Last month, we featured local strawberry ice cream. Right now we are working on a couple of new flavors including Sweet & Sour Cherry made with fruit coming out of the local orchards.”

Blueberry Swirl Ice Cream on a coneSMC has been known for its fresh-from-the-cow pasture raised dairy products, and in recent years, its grass-fed beef and Certified Humane, Cage-Free eggs. It now offers customers an unmatched virtual farmers market, where they can shop online and receive local, farm-fresh products including fresh produce and meals prepared in its commercial kitchen, delivered to their doorstep. In addition, SMC recently began offering its ice cream as a combo pack: get three pints, six pints, or two half gallons, choose your flavors, and have it delivered to your home.

“Our mission,” says Tony, “is to bring our customers the highest quality local food they can buy and to create a sustainable local family farm community. Our new Farm-to-Table ice cream is a reflection of that mission: local ingredients across the board, supporting our nearly 200 farming partners and our own farm.”

On the launch of the new ice cream, Tony continues, “We are going to start by offering these new flavors in our on-farm store. We want to get reactions direct from our visitors as we develop this idea and recipes further. We are taking suggestions for new flavors in our store and trying them out. Product innovation will be key to our business as we go forward; this is just the beginning.”

South Mountain Creamery is a family run business. Three generations work on the farm. It began as a dairy in 1981, opened the first on-farm dairy processing plant in 2001 and began home delivery service in 2003. It now delivers with in 90 miles of the farm and has become the largest most efficient home delivery service in the area serving over 9000 families.
