South Mountain Creamery is proud to announce that they are the recipients of a combined $1 million in grant funding to develop cutting-edge technology for managing animal manure and creating climate-friendly strategies.

SMC will be using the funding for two projects for the farm. First, they will be able to safely capture and burn off greenhouse gas emissions from the farm’s liquid manure lagoon using a new protective cover and flare system. The grants will also be used to treat and separate waste efficiently using a manure separation system.

The grant funding was provided by the Maryland Department of Agriculture, along with the Conservation Innovation Fund, a climate-friendly non-profit organization, and Nutrient Control Systems, a company that creates technology to improve manure management.
